How to Select

Select melons are firm to the touch. Ripe melons give slightly at the stem end when ripe and are deliciously fragrant. Remember: Even melons with small bad spots can be used sliced or balled with a melon baller.

 

How to Use

Serve melon halves with cottage cheese, ice cream, fresh fruit or seafood salad. Sliced melon is delicious when seasoned with fresh citrus juice or with prosciutto. Chilled melon halves can be served as a great summertime treat.  Firm-fleshed melons are even suitable for grilling on skewers.

 

Special Tip

Ripen melons at home by placing in a paper bag on the countertop for several days.

 

How to Store

Once melons are ripe, store in the refrigerator for several days.

Main Varieties

Galia, this round melon is orange on the outside and green on the inside.

Honeydew, creamy white or pale yellow; the fruit is large and heavy with a distinctive aroma.

Golden Honeydew, this melon is a vibrant golden exterior, a small seed cavity and a very thin rind and very sweet.

Mashhad Melon, this oval melon is ribbed and light brown on the out side and light green inside.

Hami Melon, this oval melon is ribbed and light brown to dark on the out side and light orange inside.

Fire Melon, this round melon is orange on the out side and light orange inside.

Cantaloupe, this round melon is ribbed and orange outside and orange inside.

Green Ivanaki, this oval melon is ribbed and green outside and light green inside.

Yellow Ivanaki, this oval melon is ribbed and yellow outside and light yellow inside.
